Alphanumeric Sender IDs

What’s Changing with Alphanumeric Sender ID Services in Australia

The SMS Sender ID Register was established under the Telecommunications Act 1997. Beginning July 1, 2026, the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) will require all Alphanumeric Sender IDs used to send messages to recipients in Australia to be approved through the official SMS Sender ID Register.

This regulatory update is designed to help the telecommunications industry better distinguish legitimate business messaging from potentially fraudulent activity. Once the framework takes effect, messages sent using a Sender ID that has not been approved on the register must carry an “Unverified” label.

On the register, ACMA can approve Sender IDs for the following entity types:

  • An individual
  • A corporation
  • A corporation sole
  • A body politic
  • A government entity (within the meaning of the A New Tax System (Australian Business Number) Act 1999)
  • A partner
  • Any other unincorporated association or body of persons
  • A trust
  • A superannuation fund (within the meaning of the Superannuation Industry (Supervision) Act 1993)

Important: Your Brand Belongs to You

Your Sender ID represents your brand. Once registered and approved to your entity, the Sender ID remains your organization’s asset. Registration through Sakari will not restrict you from using your approved Sender ID with other compliant service providers.
